Steve Khan

Steven Harris Cahn (born 28 April 1947) was born in Los Angeles, California. Better known as Steve Khan, he is an American jazz guitarist, composer, and author. He is known for his work with artists such as Steely Dan, Billy Joel, Michael Franks, Hubert Laws, Billy Cobham, Jack DeJohnette, James Brown, Maynard Ferguson, and Weather Report.

Noted for his versatile technical ability and harmonic precision, he has established a career that spans jazz-rock fusion, acoustic jazz, and Latin-influenced music. His professional identity is defined by a rigorous approach to both performance and the documentation of jazz guitar techniques, having transitioned from a high-profile session musician in the New York studio scene to a respected solo artist and educator.

Early Life
The son of the lyricist Sammy Cahn and Gloria Baker, he was raised in an environment saturated with the professional standards of the American entertainment industry. Despite his father's prominent career in the Great American Songbook tradition, Khan initially pursued the drums before switching to the guitar at the age of 19. He attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he studied music theory and composition. His early musical foundations were influenced by the emerging fusion movement and the sophisticated harmonic structures of post-bop jazz. After graduating, he relocated to New York City in 1970 to begin his career as a professional musician.

Career
During the 1970s and 1980s, Khan was a prolific session guitarist, collaborating extensively with leading Black artists in jazz, soul, and R&B. He contributed to significant recordings by Miles Davis (appearing on Amandla), Quincy Jones (including the hit 'Stuff Like That'), James Brown, Aretha Franklin, and Diana Ross. His session portfolio includes work with Ashford & Simpson, Chaka Khan, Al Jarreau, Lou Rawls, and Gladys Knight. Within the jazz idiom, he has performed alongside Dexter Gordon, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, and Grant Green. Khan's own group, Eyewitness, featured a long-standing collaboration with drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Anthony Jackson. His discography also includes tributes to the works of Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter, and Ornette Coleman, often "Latinizing" these compositions with musicians such as Dennis Chambers, Rubén Rodríguez, and Marc Quiñones.

Personal Life
He is the brother of the late author and songwriter Tita Cahn and maintains a commitment to preserving the musical history of his peers through his extensive online presence and commentary. His personal life is marked by a deep intellectual engagement with the technicalities of jazz, often sharing detailed "lead sheets" and transcriptions of his work with the global musical community. His legacy is characterised by a steadfast independence from commercial trends, prioritising artistic integrity and the exploration of complex rhythms. He continues to be a vocal advocate for musicians' rights and the importance of formal musical education within urban cultural centers.

Current Activities
He remains active as a recording artist and educator, with his most recent studio album, Patchwork, continuing his exploration of sophisticated ensemble arrangements featuring Dennis Chambers and Bobby Allende.
