John Morales

John Morales (born 14 April 1954) is a Bronx-born professional deejay and engineer specialising in the remixing and production of funk, soul, R&B, and disco.

His career began in the New York club circuit during the 1970s, where he held residencies and performed at venues including the Stardust Ballroom, Pippins, Bentleys, Limelight, and Studio 54. Motivated by the technical limitations of short record lengths, Morales began creating edited medleys to extend tracks for dancefloor use. These early works, known as the "Deadly Medleys" and "Sunshine Acetate Medleys," facilitated his entry into professional studio production through associations with Greg Carmichael and Patrick Adams.

A meeting at New York’s influential WBLS radio station, where Cuban-born Sergio Munzibai worked as musical director alongside Frankie Crocker, signalled the next chapter in Morales’ career. This resulted in the most prolific remix partnership of the 1980s and 1990s. Operating as M&M Productions, the duo accrued over 650 credits, delivering ground-breaking records for a diverse range of artists including Class Action, Jocelyn Brown, Shakatak, Miami Sound Machine, The Temptations, Tina Turner, The Rolling Stones, Spandau Ballet, Aretha Franklin, Shalamar, Hall & Oates, Candi Staton, Billy Ocean, The Commodores, Peter Schilling, and Rod Stewart. This period established Morales as a technical specialist in structural re-editing and multi-track mixing, influencing the evolution of the extended 12-inch single format.

Currently, Morales remains active in the restoration and expansion of classic soul and R&B catalogues through his long-standing collaboration with BBE Music and his own M+M Mix Productions. His contemporary work focuses on providing new, multi-track remixes for archival releases, including high-profile projects for major labels such as Motown, Sony Music, and Atlantic Records. Recent and upcoming production schedules for 2026 include expanded editions of the Ashford & Simpson and Marvin Gaye catalogues, alongside new remix collaborations for independent labels specialising in rare soul and disco.
