Rev. Paul Jones (born 13 October 1960; Houston, Texas – died 18 November 1990; Houston, Texas) was an American gospel singer, songwriter, and clergyman.
A dynamic vocalist known for his raw, soulful delivery and "squalling" style, Jones was a defining figure in the Texas gospel scene of the late 1980s. He served as the founder and senior pastor of the Greater New Grove Baptist Church in Houston, where he built a congregation of thousands before his untimely death at the age of 30.
He is best remembered for his signature recording, "I Won't Complain", a song that has since become a standard in the gospel canon, covered by countless artists and choirs worldwide.
Early Life
Born into a devoutly religious family in Houston, Texas, Jones was the son of Jesse James and Pauline Jones. He was raised in a musical household and began singing at an early age, performing alongside his siblings—Ruthie, Jesse, Tyrone, Don, and Janet—in a family quartet known as the "Jones Brothers."
Jones attended Sam Houston High School and later pursued higher education at Bishop College in Dallas, a historically black college known for training prominent clergy. He felt the call to ministry at the age of 16, delivering his first sermon on 15 April 1976, which marked the beginning of his dual path as a preacher and vocalist.
Career
Jones formally established his own ministry in 1981, founding the Greater New Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. Under his charismatic leadership, the church grew rapidly, eventually boasting a membership of over 2,000 congregants.
His influence extended across the city through his weekly radio broadcast on KWWJ 1360 AM, where his sermons and songs reached a diverse audience. Musically, Jones was celebrated for his powerful, emotive tenor, often blending preaching with singing in the traditional "whooping" style.
His seminal recording, I Won't Complain, was released on the T. Genesis label in 1989. The title track, with its message of resilience and gratitude amidst suffering, resonated deeply within the African American church community and became his defining anthem. Other notable tracks in his repertoire included "Don't Want No Rocks" and "Let Your Will Be Done".
Personal Life
Beyond the pulpit, Jones was known for his dedication to community outreach, specifically focusing on drug-involved youth and the homeless population in Houston. His ministry was characterized by a "come as you are" approach, which endeared him to the marginalized.
Tragically, Jones’s life was cut short on 18 November 1990, when he was murdered during a robbery at his home in Houston. The crime shocked the gospel community, and his funeral was attended by thousands of mourners.
