Curtis Stigers

Curtis Stigers (born 18 October 1965, Hollywood, California, United States) is an American jazz singer, songwriter, and saxophonist. Best known for the 1991 hit “I Wonder Why”, he bridges jazz, pop, rock, and soul with an emphasis on expressive jazz vocals and tenor saxophone. His catalogue blends original songs with thoughtful reinterpretations, and his recordings have featured prominently in film and television, including The Bodyguard and the FX series Sons of Anarchy, for which he co‑wrote and performed the Emmy‑nominated main title theme “This Life”.

Early Life

Raised in Boise, Idaho, Stigers grew up in a household where curiosity about music was encouraged, and school programmes gave him early structure. He studied clarinet and saxophone in high school, while playing in local rock and blues bands that sharpened his stagecraft. A pivotal influence came from pianist Gene Harris’s jam sessions at the Idanha Hotel, where Stigers absorbed the language of jazz firsthand; he later paid tribute to that formative period in “Swingin’ Down at Tenth and Main”. After graduating, he moved to New York City with rock ambitions, but the pull of small jazz rooms—singing and playing saxophone—shaped the direction of his artistry and broadened his musical foundations.

Career

Signing to Arista Records, Stigers released his self-titled debut, Curtis Stigers (1991), which went multi‑platinum and delivered chart successes including “I Wonder Why” (UK No. 5; US No. 9) and “You’re All That Matters to Me” (UK Top 10). His version of Nick Lowe’s “(What’s So Funny ’Bout) Peace, Love, and Understanding” featured on the 1992 soundtrack to The Bodyguard, introducing his voice to a global audience. Subsequent albums—Time Was (1995, Arista) and Brighter Days (1999, Columbia)—leaned into pop and soul while signalling his growing affinity for jazz phrasing and repertoire.

From the 2000s, Stigers recorded widely for Concord Jazz, including projects such as “Baby Plays Around” and sessions with Chris Minh Doky and Randy Brecker. These records showcased a warm, conversational vocal style and lyrical saxophone tone across standards, contemporary songbook choices, and select originals. He broadened his palette with Let’s Go Out Tonight (2012), an Americana‑inflected set featuring material by Steve Earle, Richard Thompson, and Hayes Carll. For television, he co‑wrote and performed “This Life”, the main title theme for Sons of Anarchy, which earned an Emmy nomination, and he recorded “John the Revelator” for the show’s first‑season finale. On stage and in the studio, he has worked with Elton John, Eric Clapton, Prince, Bonnie Raitt, Rod Stewart, The Allman Brothers Band, and Joe Cocker. His live schedule has included club residencies, festival appearances, BBC Television’s Just the Two of Us (2006, with Penny Smith), and a 2009 Proms concert celebrating MGM musicals.

Known for an open, audience‑centred approach—whether from the bandstand or through regular livestreams—he brings an easy warmth to performances that has helped sustain a loyal listenership. His professional legacy spans early‑1990s mainstream success and a mature body of work as a jazz vocalist and saxophonist, valued for interpretive insight, collaborative range, and an ongoing engagement with the modern American songbook.
