Val Douglas

Val Douglas, born in Jamaica and sometimes credited as Val "Doggy" Douglas or by the nickname "The Magician," is a Jamaican bassist, keyboardist, arranger, composer, and producer, and the current bassist of The Skatalites.

Early Life

Douglas came to the bass somewhat by accident. As an engineering student at the College of Arts, Science and Technology (CAST) in Kingston, he was drafted at a day's notice to fill in for a missing bassist at a show, having previously dabbled in guitar. He learned the part in time to perform successfully, and word of his ability spread quickly through Kingston's music scene. The gigs came thick and fast, and Douglas soon left his final year of engineering studies behind to pursue music professionally, though he retained a lifelong interest in machinery and technology.

Career

Douglas built his reputation through the late 1960s and 1970s playing with a run of notable Jamaican outfits, including the Fabulous Falcons, the Mighty Vikings, the Caribs, and the United Stars, before becoming a founding member of the influential session outfit the Now Generation Band, alongside Mikey Chung, Geoffrey Chung, Robbie Lyn, Earl "Wire" Lindo, and Mikey "Boo" Richards. Now Generation became one of the most in-demand studio bands in Jamaica, recording for producers including Duke Reid, Joe Gibbs, Bunny Lee, Lee "Scratch" Perry, Harry J, Sonia Pottinger, and Harry Mudie.

As a session and touring bassist, Douglas went on to record and perform with a broad span of reggae, ska, rocksteady, dub, and soul artists, including The Abyssinians, Peter Tosh, Delroy Wilson, Dennis Brown, Ken Boothe, Lloyd Charmers, Bob Marley and The Wailers, The Heptones, Ernest Ranglin, June Lodge, Marcia Griffiths, Lorna Bennett, Bob Andy, Pablo Moses, The Congos, Sharon Forrester, Joe Higgs, Derrick Harriott, and Beres Hammond, among others. He also played with Burning Spear, the Sonny Bradshaw Seven, CrossRoads, Monyaka, and led his own band, the A-Team, and later toured with Maxi Priest and Toots and the Maytals.

Douglas has been the bassist of The Skatalites, the pioneering Jamaican ska band, for a number of years, touring internationally alongside fellow current and former members. His work has drawn attention from the international press, including an interview feature in The New York Times, and he has continued to record as a solo artist, releasing the studio album Spirits, which features a collaboration with guitarist Mike Stern.

Personal Life

Douglas is regarded within Jamaican music circles as one of the most technically accomplished and versatile bass players of his generation, with a body of session and touring work that spans ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, and soul across more than five decades. His contribution, largely as a behind-the-scenes studio musician rather than a frontman, has been cited by fans and musicians alike as foundational to the sound of numerous classic Jamaican recordings.

Douglas continues to tour internationally as the bassist of The Skatalites, and remains active as a solo recording artist and collaborator.
