Robert "Shotgun" Johnson (21 March 1953 – 1983) was a premier American drummer and a cornerstone of the Miami sound, best known as a key member of KC and the Sunshine Band.
Born in Miami, Florida, Johnson brought a unique technical prowess to the group, blending a sophisticated jazz influence with the hard-hitting rhythmic discipline of his idol, James Brown. His presence helped define the sunshine-drenched funk and disco that emerged from the TK Records stable, alongside fellow Florida natives Harry Wayne "K.C." Casey, Jerome Smith, and Ronnie Smith.
Johnson's rhythmic precision was central to the band's meteoric rise, propelling tracks like "Blow Your Whistle" and "Do It Good" onto the charts. His impact on the industry reached a historic peak during the mid-1970s; by the time the anthem "(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty" dominated the airwaves, Johnson became the only drummer in history—other than Ringo Starr—to have played on three chart-topping hits within a single calendar year. His explosive playing style earned him the nickname "Shotgun," a moniker further immortalised by the popular instrumental dance track "Shotgun Shuffle," which showcased his ability to lead a groove with unmatched intensity.
Beyond his work with the Sunshine Band, Johnson was a highly sought-after session player within the vibrant Florida music scene, contributing to the eclectic "Junkanoo" inspired beats that made the Miami sound a global phenomenon.
Johnson passed away from cancer in 1983.
