Black Thought (born 3 October 1973) is an American rapper, singer, and actor born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. As the lead MC and co-founder of the hip hop group the Roots, he is widely regarded as one of the most technically proficient and incisive rappers in the history of the genre. He is particularly lauded for his complex internal rhyme schemes, socially conscious lyricism, and his high-profile role as a featured performer on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Early Life
Tarik Luqmaan Trotter was born to Thomas and Cassandra Trotter, both of whom were active members of the Nation of Islam. His upbringing was marked by significant personal tragedy; his father was murdered when he was one year old, and his mother was murdered while he was a student in high school. During his youth in Philadelphia, he was active in the city's graffiti scene under the aliases 'DT' and 'Double T'. He attended the Philadelphia High School for Creative and Performing Arts, where he met drummer Ahmir 'Questlove' Thompson in 1987. Trotter later studied journalism at Millersville University before committing fully to his musical career.
Career
Trotter’s professional journey began as a street performer in Philadelphia, eventually forming the Square Roots, later shortened to the Roots. The group released their debut album, Organix, in 1993, followed by influential records such as Do You Want More?!!!??! and the Grammy-winning Things Fall Apart in 1999. In addition to his group work, Trotter has maintained an extensive solo career, notably through his Streams of Thought EP series and the 2022 collaborative album Cheat Codes with producer Danger Mouse. His reputation for technical mastery was further cemented in 2017 when a 10-minute freestyle on hot 97 went viral, garnering millions of views for its sustained lyrical complexity. His career also encompasses acting and musical theater, including the 2022 production Black No More and his 2023 autobiography, The Upcycled Mind.
Personal Life
In 2010, Trotter married his wife, Michelle, with whom he has five children. Outside of his musical and theatrical endeavours, he is involved in film production and community work, notably serving as an executive producer for the short film Ash Land, which explored the Black experience in Oregon during the pandemic. His professional legacy is defined by his technical mastery of emceeing, with peers frequently citing his exceptional breath control and ability to perform intricate verses live as a hallmark of his style.
Current Activities
Managed by his own production and representation teams, Black Thought is currently engaged in several high-profile projects. As of April 2026, he is preparing for the headline slot at the Roots Picnic in Philadelphia, which features a milestone collaboration with Jay-Z. He is also confirmed for a major UK performance at the Crystal Palace Bowl theater in August 2026. Regarding recorded material, he is currently in the final stages of the Roots' long-awaited studio album, End Game, which features contributions from Anderson .Paak and Benny the Butcher.
