Terence Young (born 22 April) is a native of Elko, South Carolina. Known for his technical proficiency as an electric jazz and R&B guitarist, he developed an interest in the instrument at the age of ten, influenced by his uncles, who were gospel musicians. After completing his education at Williston-Elko High School, he established a career within the regional jazz and R&B circuits. Over a professional tenure spanning several decades, Young has released 14 instrumental albums that explore a range of genres, including smooth jazz, gospel, rock, and funk.
Throughout his career, Young has served as a session musician and music director for several notable R&B vocalists. He was the music director for Ashford and Simpson and has performed with artists including Angie Stone, Lenny Williams, and Aaron Hall. His studio credits include guitar contributions to the Earth, Wind & Fire Tribute album featuring Angie Stone. As a live performer, he has co-headlined or shared stages with a variety of jazz and soul musicians, such as Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Al Jarreau, Roberta Flack, and George Duke. Beyond standard concert venues, he has performed the national anthem at professional and collegiate sporting events and appeared at the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) convention and the Harbison Theatre.
At the time of writing, currently managed by his own business operations, Young maintains a consistent schedule of live performances across the Southeastern United States. He is the founder and manager of the Finesse Band, a corporate and private event ensemble that has operated for over two decades.
His primary performance vehicle, known as The Terence Young Experience, is scheduled for various appearances in early 2026, including a series of dates at the Jabez Sanford Hardin Performing Arts Centre and the Middle C Jazz Club.
