Jay Robinson. (b. February 18th, 1940).Vocalist and founding member of the American group, The Supremes.
The Supremes
Often overshadowed by the iconic Motown trio that later inherited their name, the Supremes—frequently referred to as the Columbus Supremes—were a cornerstone of the mid-1950s Ohio R&B scene. Known for their smooth harmonies and regional staying power, they remain a "hidden gem" celebrated by vocal group scholars and Doo Wop enthusiasts.
Origins at East High
The group was formed in 1954 among students at East High School on the East Side of Columbus, Ohio. The ensemble’s line-up evolved during their formative years, involving a tight-knit circle of local vocalists:
The moniker was born from necessity rather than glamour. As the story goes, the group was seeking warmth during a bitter Ohio winter night and found inspiration in a bottle of Bourbon Supreme. Jay Robinson initially dubbed them the "Fabulous Supremes," a name they eventually shortened for their professional career.
Regional Dominance and Ace Records
Between 1954 and 1957, the quintet reigned as one of the most highly regarded R&B vocal ensembles in the upper Midwest. Their local popularity finally translated into a national opportunity in 1957 when they secured a major engagement in Florida—their first venture outside their home region.
This momentum caught the attention of Ace Records, where the group recorded the soulful single "Just for You and I." While the track showcased their polished East High roots, it failed to achieve the commercial breakthrough the group needed to sustain national interest.
The Motown Hand-Off
By 1959, the Columbus Supremes had largely moved on, though their impact on the Ohio circuit remained significant. Their dissolution left the "Supremes" name vacant in the industry registry. Consequently, when the Motown-based Primettes were searching for a new identity a few years later, the name was available for the taking.
Though the Columbus originals reunited for occasional performances into the 1970s, they are primarily remembered today as a vital link in the evolution of mid-century vocal R&B.
