Cliff Perkins (born 27 January 1948) is an American lead singer, songwriter, producer, and the founding member of the legendary R&B vocal group Soul Generation. Known for his smooth tenor and falsetto, Perkins has anchored the group's signature sound for over five decades, establishing them as a cornerstone of the Jersey City soul scene.
Musical Career and Soul Generation
Perkins formed the group originally known as The Citations in 1970 in Jersey City, New Jersey. After renaming themselves Soul Generation, their debut single, "Body and Soul (That’s the Way It’s Got to Be)," produced by Paul Kyser, became a success, spending 11 weeks on the Billboard R&B singles chart and peaking at No. 27 in 1972. The group had further releases in the 1970s, including "Million Dollars" (1973), "I Wonder What She's Doing" (1974), and "Praying for a Miracle".
Following Soul Generation's disbandment in 1983, Perkins worked as a session singer for various acts. He also provided vocals for national commercial campaigns.
Legacy and Business Ventures
In 1989, Perkins re-established Soul Generation, eventually performing as Soul Generation featuring Cliff Perkins. He also established an entertainment business that includes his own record label, II Class Records, and the talent management firm ITP Management.
Perkins continues to perform today, sometimes with his daughter Crystal Perkins, maintaining the legacy of the group's sound.
