Tyrese Darnell Gibson (born 30 December 1978; Watts, Los Angeles, California), also known mononymously as Tyrese, is an American singer, songwriter, rapper, actor, model, VJ, screenwriter, film producer, author and television producer.
Early Life
Gibson was raised in the Watts neighbourhood of South Central Los Angeles by his single mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson, the youngest of four children. He attended Locke High School, where music teacher Reggie Andrews connected the then sixteen-year-old with an open casting call for a 1994 Coca-Cola commercial, a break that led to modelling work for brands including Guess and Tommy Hilfiger and set him on a path toward a recording career.
Career
Gibson signed to RCA Records in 1998 and released his debut single, "Nobody Else," which reached the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100, followed by his self-titled debut album, Tyrese, later that year, which was certified platinum and produced the further single "Sweet Lady." His second album, 2000 Watts (2001), was certified gold and featured "Just a Baby Boy," included on the soundtrack of the 2001 film Baby Boy, in which Gibson also starred. His third album, I Wanna Go There (2002), was also certified gold and led by "How You Gonna Act Like That," which reached number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and remains his highest-charting single to date.
He went on to release the albums Alter Ego, Open Invitation (2011) and Black Rose (2013), and has earned three Grammy Award nominations and the 2000 American Music Award for Favorite New R&B/Soul Artist over the course of his recording career.
In 2007, he formed the R&B supergroup TGT alongside Ginuwine and Tank, releasing the trio's debut album, Three Kings, in 2013, which reached number three in the United States. Alongside his music career, Gibson has built a substantial filmography, most notably as Roman Pearce in the Fast & Furious franchise, and in films including Baby Boy, Four Brothers, Death Race, Legion and the Transformers series.
He has also released material as an author, has appeared as a VJ, and operates his own record label and production company, Voltron Entertainment. In 2026, he released the album Beautiful Pain and, drawing on the album, began developing a nationwide stage play of the same name, blending live music and acting and inspired by pivotal moments in his own life.
Personal Life
Gibson has been married twice, to Norma Mitchell from 2007 to 2009 and to Samantha Lee Gibson from 2017 to 2020, and has two daughters. His mother, Priscilla Murray Gibson, who raised him, passed away in 2022.
Gibson has spoken publicly about drawing on the losses and challenges of recent years, including divorce and the death of his mother, as creative inspiration for his most recent work. Over a three-decade career spanning platinum-selling R&B records and blockbuster film franchises, he has established himself as one of the more versatile and enduring multi-hyphenate entertainers of his generation.
Current Activities
Gibson continues to tour and perform, with 2026 dates including an appearance at the Cincinnati Music Festival alongside Charlie Wilson, Nelly and Ledisi, the R&B Music Experience: The Legacy Series at Belmont Park's UBS Arena, and a solo performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
He is also preparing to take his Beautiful Pain stage play on a planned nationwide tour. Managed by his own production and representation teams through Voltron Entertainment, Tyrese Gibson is currently engaged in several projects.
