Miguel

Miguel Jontel Pimentel (born 23 October 1985; San Pedro, California), better known as Miguel, is an American alternative R&B singer, songwriter, record producer, and actor.

Recognised for his eclectic blending of contemporary rhythm and blues, rock, funk, and electronic textures, he emerged as a vanguard of the alternative R&B movement during the early 2010s. His distinctive vocal versatility, falsetto delivery, and innovative studio production have earned him widespread critical acclaim alongside a Grammy Award.

Early Life

Raised in the port neighbourhood of San Pedro, California, Pimentel was born to an African American mother and a Mexican American father. His childhood environment was heavily shaped by his parents' diverse musical preferences, introducing him to classic rhythm and blues through his mother, while his father exposed him to funk, hip-hop, jazz, and classic rock. Following his parents' divorce when he was eight years old, he remained deeply focused on creative arts and performance.

By the age of thirteen, he began actively pursuing a music career, eventually being introduced to the local production company Drop Squad during his eleventh-grade year, where he spent the remainder of his high school years mastering the technical mechanics of a recording studio.

Career

Pimentel initially signed with the independent label Black Ice Records in 2004, recording a studio album titled Young & Free that was ultimately shelved and left unreleased due to contractual and distribution disputes. He subsequently secured a contract with Jive Records in 2007, culminating in the release of his debut studio album, All I Want Is You, in November 2010. Though underpromoted upon its initial rollout, the record became a sleeper commercial success driven by the title track featuring J. Cole and the enduring single "Sure Thing".

Following the dissolution of Jive Records in 2011, he transitioned to the RCA Records roster, where his sophomore album, Kaleidoscope Dream, achieved universal critical acclaim in 2012, anchored by the multi-platinum anthem "Adorn", which won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song. He expanded his sonic experimentalism with his subsequent mainstream studio LPs, Wildheart in 2015 and War & Leisure in 2017, the latter spawning the hit single "Sky Walker" featuring Travis Scott.

Beyond his solo discography, he contributed a prominent duet version of "Remember Me" to the soundtrack of the Pixar animated feature Coco and established himself on screen with acting roles in major feature films including Live by Night and Detroit.

Personal Life

His personal journey has been profoundly reflected in his artistry, showcasing a continuous exploration of vulnerability, emotional transparency, and cultural identity. For many years, his personal life was closely linked with his high-profile relationship and marriage to model and actress Nazanin Mandi, an extended partnership that began during his early pre-fame career before their eventual separation and divorce in 2022.

Pimentel subsequently entered a relationship with Chinese-Australian filmmaker, creative director, and former Vogue China editor-in-chief Margaret Zhang, with whom he quietly welcomed a son named Angelito in September 2024. The couple publicly introduced their child during his first birthday celebrations in late 2025 and subsequently announced they were expecting their second child together during a red-carpet appearance in August 2026.

Current Activities

Entering a deeply transformative creative era, Pimentel released his highly anticipated fifth studio album, CAOS, via ByStorm Entertainment and RCA Records on 23 October 2025. Arriving after an eight-year hiatus from full-length mainstream studio LPs, the project represents a sharp sonic and emotional pivot, reflecting intense periods of personal recalibration, shadow work, and rupture. The album marks an aggressive, introspective departure that architects a dark collision of grunge, alternative R&B, industrial rock, and Afro-Latin rhythms, with Pimentel leaning heavily into his Latino heritage by intentionally writing and recording tracks in Spanish to express his subconscious identity.

This new era coincided with a massive viral resurgence of his 2011 classic "Sure Thing" on TikTok, which unexpectedly climbed to Number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and dominated global pop radio nearly fifteen years after its initial release.
