Antonious Thomas, better known by his stage name Cody ChesnuTT (born October 21, 1968; Atlanta, Georgia), is an American rhythm and blues, neo soul, and alternative rock musician, composer, singer, and guitarist celebrated for his raw, genre-blurring approach to songwriting.
He initially gained mainstream exposure through high-profile collaborations and an acclaimed lo-fi debut, establishing a reputation as a fiercely independent artist. Known for blending elements of rock, funk, soul, hip hop, and blues, he has historically balanced his musical career with periods of intentional absence from the commercial industry. His contributions as a multi-instrumentalist and writer have left a distinct footprint on the alternative soul landscape, marked by a refusal to conform to traditional studio production trends.
Early Life
Born Antonious Thomas, he grew up in Atlanta, where his early musical foundations were formed under the direct influence of his father, who worked as a music manager. Showing precocious talent, ChesnuTT was performing on local stages as a young teenager, opening for various acts represented by his father's agency. This early exposure to the mechanics of the music business shaped his artistic drive and technical versatility. In his late twenties, he transitioned into leading his own rock-influenced group called The Crosswalk, alongside musicians James O'Connell, John Maggio, and Jay Gordon, laying the groundwork for his entry into major-label territory.
Career
His professional timeline began with writing and producing songs for the R&B group Six Feet Deep under Death Row Records, which later led to a song placement on the Gridlock'd movie soundtrack. After a brief stint with Hollywood Records, during which The Crosswalk's debut album was shelved, the band fractured, prompting ChesnuTT to record independently. He holed up in his home bedroom studio, dubbed "The Sonic Promiseland", writing and producing a sprawling 36-track double LP on a four-track cassette recorder.
This effort became his 2002 debut album, The Headphone Masterpiece, which received immense critical acclaim. Later that year, hip hop group The Roots reworked one of its tracks into the collaborative smash hit "The Seed (2.0)" for their album Phrenology, earning ChesnuTT international recognition and an MTV Video Music Award nomination. Following a period of near-silence to focus on his family, he returned with the social-issue EP Black Skin No Value in 2010. In October 2012, he released his sophomore full-length studio album, Landing On A Hundred, a robust, organic soul record taped at Memphis's Royal Studios using Al Green’s historic microphone. He followed this in 2017 with My Love Divine Degree, produced by Anthony "Twilite Tone" Khan, which featured the single "Image of Love". His work has since reached audiences globally, highlighted by an original song contribution titled "Parting Ways" for the 2020 Pixar animated film Soul.
Personal Life
ChesnuTT’s personal journey has been defined by significant spiritual and lifestyle transformations. Following his early brush with mainstream fame, he underwent a personal conversion, moving his family to Florida and later Tallahassee to distance himself from the excesses of the entertainment industry. He has been candid in his music and interviews about his path to redemption, addressing past battles with crack cocaine addiction, womanising, and the exhaustion of infidelity. Choosing to prioritise his marriage and commit heavily to fatherhood, he spent years stepped away from the spotlight to raise his two children. His reflective, introspective nature underpins his artistic legacy, often weaving themes of slow-burning marital love, faith, and systemic social justice into his public platform.
Current Activities
At present, ChesnuTT continues to engage with audiences through a mix of live festival circuits, academic outreach, and unique multimedia presentations. In 2026, he introduced a brand-new live analogue performance experiment curated by surrealist blues poet Aja Monet entitled MAKING SCIENCE SIMPLE, a project offered as an intimate sequence of sonic vignettes focusing on the living word. His live legacy has also enjoyed a strong international presence through recent European tour bookings and the release of archival live concert recordings, including his widely shared sets at the Sons d'Hiver Festival.
