Cecil Parker (born 15 October; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), professionally known as Cecil Parker, is an American soul and R&B vocalist, songwriter, and producer who came to prominence with the mid-tempo 1980 soul hit "Really, Really Love You".
Recognised for his impressive multi-octave range and lush vocal arrangements, Parker emerged from the legendary Philadelphia music scene to build a multi-decade international career. Navigating the industry from major label contracts to pioneering an independent business path, he has established an enduring legacy as an electric live performer, recording entrepreneur, and an accomplished voice within contemporary rhythm and blues.
Early Life
Raised on the streets of Philadelphia, Parker grew up in a household anchored by his mother, who served as his biggest supporter throughout his early life. While music was an early presence through an uncle who played piano in local churches, Parker initially focused his talents elsewhere, taking clarinet lessons as a child and later teaching himself to play the bass and drums for high school talent shows.
His natural athleticism eventually earned him a track and field scholarship to Penn State University, where he achieved AAU and Olympic Development status.
His singing career began entirely by chance when his fraternity brothers quite literally pushed the notoriously shy athlete onto the stage during a college theatre and arts talent night. His spontaneous rendition of a Jackson 5 B-side captivated the room, earning a standing ovation and completely shifting his life’s trajectory toward professional music.
Career
Parker’s professional recording journey began when legendary producer Thom Bell directed him to Stan Watson at Philly Groove Records. Though he cut unreleased archival material with the label alongside iconic musicians at Sigma Sound Studios, it was his subsequent transition to TEC/WMOT Records that launched his career.
In 1980, Billboard named him the "Most Promising New Talent" following the worldwide success of his smooth modern soul anthem "Really, Really Love You", released via EMI and TEC. His debut studio album, Chirpin', arrived that same year, spawning the popular single "Love Is". Navigating industry shifts, Parker founded his independent Spectrum label to release the moving ballad "I'm So Hurt" in 1985, and later collaborated with disco pioneer Vince Montana Jr. on the Linda Creed-Thom Bell composition "I Think I'll Tell Her" in 1984.
His robust independent discography spans albums like Essensual (2000) and For Now (2003). As a live powerhouse, Parker headlined major showrooms from the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City to the Rio, Sands, and Tropicana in Las Vegas, while additionally performing at NBA 76ers games and headlining international stages for Celebrity and Carnival cruise lines across Europe, Asia, and South America.
Personal Life
Parker’s personal life and career have been deeply intertwined with the community of Philadelphia, where he continues to reside and base his business operations. His early career milestones were marked by profound personal tragedy when his sister was murdered the very week of his initial headlining performance debut in Atlantic City, an event that deeply influenced his emotional depth as a ballad singer.
Throughout his life, Parker has balanced his recording schedule with community recognition, notably receiving the Penn State University/Kappa Alpha Psi Career Achievement Award. He was also honoured as a featured subject in the historical book Philly Pop, Rock, Rhythm and Blues, cementing his status as a permanent fixture in the musical heritage of his home city.
Current Activities
Serving as a Grammy Voting Member and recording entrepreneur, he continues to bridge his classic soul foundations with modern releases. In recent years, his deep catalogue has found renewed life on digital streaming platforms, complemented by contemporary independent singles including "For You" (2013), his award-winning track "Uh Oh" (2020), and the vibrant dance single "Now See Me" (2024).
