John Derek Yancey (born 13 October 1986; Detroit, Michigan), better known by his stage name Illa J, is an American rapper, singer, producer, and songwriter.
As a multi-instrumentalist with a distinctive, soulful vocal style, he has carved out a unique lane in the hip-hop landscape, bridging the gap between the classic Detroit sound and contemporary neo-soul. He is a member of the duo Jaywalk and The Cadillacs and the group Yancey Boys, and is widely recognised for his tenure as a pivotal member of the legendary hip-hop group Slum Village during their resurgence in the early 2010s.
Yancey is the younger brother of the late, iconic producer James Dewitt Yancey (J Dilla), and has spent his career both honouring that familial legacy and establishing his own artistic identity through a prolific solo catalogue.
Early Life
Born into a deeply musical family on the east side of Detroit, Yancey was exposed to a rich variety of genres from a young age. His father, DeWitt Yancey, was a jazz bassist and ghostwriter for Motown, while his mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, was an opera singer. This environment provided a rigorous informal education in music theory and performance.
Although his older brother James (J Dilla) was already a rising star in hip-hop during John’s childhood, John initially gravitated towards basketball and academics, attending Central Michigan University. However, he possessed a natural musical aptitude, singing in his family’s a cappella choir and teaching himself piano. Following his brother's passing in 2006, Yancey decided to pursue music professionally, teaching himself to produce and eventually relocating to Los Angeles to launch his career.
Career
Yancey made his official debut in 2008 with the solo album Yancey Boys, released on Delicious Vinyl. The project was built entirely on previously unused beats from the J Dilla vault, instantly garnering critical attention.
In the years that followed, he became an integral part of the Detroit hip-hop lineage, officially joining Slum Village alongside T3 and producer Young RJ. During this productive period, he contributed to the mixtapes Dirty Slums (2012) and Dirty Slums 2 (2013), as well as the studio album Evolution (2013).
Simultaneously, he expanded the "Yancey Boys" brand into a full group with Frank Nitt, releasing Sunset Blvd. (2013). Following his departure from Slum Village to focus on solo endeavours, Yancey moved to Montreal, where he recorded a string of introspective albums including Illa J (2015), Home (2017), and John Yancey (2019), often collaborating with producer Calvin Valentine.
His 2023 album No Traffic further solidified his reputation as a "one-man band," showcasing his ability to rap, sing, and play multiple instruments.
Personal Life
Yancey’s personal life is inextricably linked to the legacy of his brother, and he has been a driving force in keeping the J Dilla name alive. He has performed annually at Dilla Day Detroit, a tribute event held at venues such as The Fillmore, sharing the stage with luminaries like Royce da 5'9" and Talib Kweli.
Despite the weight of this legacy, Yancey has been vocal about his journey towards self-definition, using his music to process grief and personal growth. He has lived in various creative hubs, including Los Angeles and Montreal, before returning to his US roots, a journey that has heavily influenced the sonic diversity of his output.
Current Activities
Managed by his own production and representation teams, Illa J is currently engaged in several projects. Most notably, he formed the collaborative band Jaywalk and The Cadillacs with UK producer Ash Walker, releasing their debut album Whitewalls & Harmonies in September 2025.
The project, which fuses jazz, soul, and funk textures, was supported by an extensive international tour that included stops in London, Paris, Amsterdam, Breda, and Barcelona.
In 2026, Yancey released the single "My Way" ahead of his upcoming solo production EP, Phone Home, as well as the single "Skywalker". He continues to collaborate with a wide network of artists, including ongoing work with Slum Village affiliates and independent producers.
