Fred Cash (born October 8, 1940; Chattanooga, Tennessee) is an American soul singer best known as a long-serving member of the legendary R&B group The Impressions.
As a defining voice in the group's lush vocal harmonies, Cash helped shape the "Chicago Soul" sound that became the soundtrack for the Civil Rights Movement.
A 1991 inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a 2016 inductee into the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, he spent over five decades recording and touring with the group before their retirement in 2018.
Early Life
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Cash was the third of four children raised in a deeply musical household. His mother was a pianist, and the entire family sang regularly at the Beulah Baptist Church, where his father served as a Deacon.
His musical partnership with fellow Impressions member Sam Gooden began in childhood; the two were neighbours who started singing together in church choirs. They later performed as members of The Roosters, a vocal ensemble that eventually evolved into The Impressions.
Although Cash was an original member of this early lineup, he was forced to leave the group before their move to Chicago because his mother refused to let him relocate at such a young age.
Career
Cash's professional career began in earnest in 1960 when he rejoined The Impressions to replace original lead singer Jerry Butler. Stepping into the lineup alongside Curtis Mayfield and Sam Gooden, Cash provided the smooth baritone and tenor harmonies that anchored the group's most successful era. He performed on a string of socially conscious and romantic hits, including "People Get Ready," "Keep On Pushing," and "It's All Right."
His contributions are documented in the 2008 DVD Movin' On Up: The Message and The Music of Curtis Mayfield & The Impressions, which features him in the group's first-ever extended interview alongside Gooden and archival footage of Mayfield.
Cash continued to tour and record with The Impressions for decades, maintaining the group's legacy long after Mayfield's departure, until they officially retired from performing in 2018.
Personal Life
Fred Cash has lived in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for much of his life, maintaining strong ties to the community where his musical journey began. Following the deaths of Curtis Mayfield in 1999 and Sam Gooden in 2022, Cash became the last surviving member of the group's classic hitmaking trio.
He remains a revered figure in the soul music community, celebrated for his role in preserving the integrity and message of The Impressions' music for nearly sixty years.
Current Activities
As of late 2026, Fred Cash continues to reside in Chattanooga. While The Impressions have ceased touring, his work continues to be celebrated through official channels and recognised archives. He remains active in preserving the group's history, occasionally participating in interviews and retrospective projects that honour the enduring impact of the "Chicago Soul" era.
