Robert Lynn Wilson (4 October 1956 – 15 August 2010; Tulsa, Oklahoma), affectionately known as "Uncle" Robert Wilson or the "Godfather of Bass Guitar", was an American bassist, vocalist, and songwriter celebrated as a founding member of the legendary R&B and funk band, The Gap Band.
He was renowned for his distinctive electric bass technique, combining a thumb-slapping style with a melodic, driving low-end that anchored the group's signature sound. Alongside his brothers, he created an influential body of work that spanned multiple decades and left a lasting imprint on modern soul and hip-hop.
Early Life
Born and raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Wilson grew up in a household deeply immersed in musical traditions. His father, Reverend Oscar Wilson, was a Pentecostal minister who insisted that all his children learn to play musical instruments, while his mother, Willie Mae Wilson, provided formal music lessons and encouraged their singing talents.
Though initially trained on the piano, Wilson discovered a natural affinity for the bass guitar during his youth. The family home was located near the historic Greenwood district, a culturally rich area known historically as Black Wall Street. This vibrant neighbourhood and its local music scene significantly shaped his early artistic identity and provided the inspiration for his future collaborative endeavours with his older siblings, Ronnie and Charlie.
Career
The foundations of his professional career were laid in 1967 when the brothers formed the Greenwood, Archer, and Pine Street Band, a name honouring the streets bordering the Greenwood district.
After shortening the name to The Gap Band, the group entered its mainstream commercial era during the late 1970s and 1980s under Mercury Records and Total Experience Records, scoring definitive funk hits such as "Shake", "Oops Upside Your Head", "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)", "Outstanding", and "You Dropped a Bomb On Me".
Wilson's rhythmic precision on a Fender Precision bass served as the ultimate structural anchor for these club anthems. As the musical landscape shifted into the 1990s, the band transitioned into an independent era, releasing albums like Live & Well and YK: Funkin' Till 2000 Comz, while maintaining a dedicated international touring circuit.
Wilson embarked on a solo trajectory in 2009 by signing an exclusive recording contract with Lucky 7 Records, a label organised by his nephew Frank Wilson, to record an eagerly anticipated solo album.
Personal Life
Beyond the stage, Wilson maintained a stable and private family life away from the typical pressures of the entertainment industry. He was married to his wife, Brenda Wilson, and the couple raised two daughters, Robin and Latina, along with a son, creating a close-knit family environment that remained his central focus outside of his professional commitments.
Wilson was known within his community and among fellow musicians for his warm, approachable demeanour, as recounted in a memorial feature by NPR, where peers highlighted his musical mentorship.
His deep-seated roots in the church never faded, and he regularly credited his upbringing for giving his life stability and spiritual perspective. He resided in Palmdale, California, for his final years, remaining deeply connected to his brothers despite the individual paths their respective careers eventually took.
Current Activities
Following Wilson's sudden passing from a heart attack at his Palmdale residence on 15 August 2010, the remaining members officially retired the band name, concluding a historic 43-year musical journey His scheduled solo album for Lucky 7 Records was subsequently shelved, remaining an unreleased project highly sought after by funk purists.
In the digital streaming era, his artistic legacy undergoes continuous rediscovery, as classic albums from their extensive catalog attract millions of monthly listeners on The Gap Band on Spotify. Furthermore, his foundational basslines remain a massive force in contemporary music, heavily sampled by prominent hip-hop and R&B producers, ensuring his innovative technique continues to echo across modern soundscapes.
