Calvin Dontez Ross (born October 2, 1992; Jackson, Tennessee) is an American R&B singer, songwriter, and producer. Emerging from the Southern music scene, Ross is recognised for his "Urban R&B" sound, which fuses the vocal stylings of 1990s and 2000s contemporary R&B with modern trap-influenced production.
A self-taught musician who writes and produces much of his own catalogue, he first gained significant industry attention in the mid-2010s after winning a showcase at Sean "Diddy" Combs's Daddy's House Recording Studio.
Early Life
Born in Jackson, Tennessee, Ross experienced a tumultuous childhood marked by early separation from his biological family. At only a few months old, he and his older sister, Domonic, were removed from their parents' care and placed into the foster care system. He remained in the same foster home with six other children until the age of nine, when his paternal grandparents relocated him to Detroit, Michigan. He spent six formative years in Detroit before returning to Tennessee at age 17.
Upon his return, he began his musical journey using a friend's $100 studio setup, teaching himself to create beats on the digital audio workstation Fruity Loops. Driven by a desire for quality, he transitioned from strictly beat-making to vocal recording and engineering, vowing not to release material until it met his high sonic standards.
Career
Ross's professional trajectory accelerated in June 2014 when he travelled to New York City to compete in a showcase at Daddy's House, the legendary recording studio founded by P. Diddy. Winning the event provided him with a pivotal opportunity to meet with A&R representatives from Def Jam Recordings, a validation that encouraged him to pursue music full-time. He subsequently built a regional following with singles like "Bad Fetish" (2015) and "Love Love," eventually releasing his debut EP, Erotica, in 2018.
His live performance résumé grew to include opening slots for major R&B and hip-hop acts such as Avant, Urban Mystic, YFN Lucci, Yung Bleu, Snootie Wild, and Kia Shine. In 2019, his efforts were recognised when he won the SCM Award for "Bobby Womack R&B Artist of the Year." He later secured a management deal with Rushing Management in 2020, which included an exclusive production partnership with the Grammy-winning producer Drumma Boy.
