Dion Allen (born October 2, 1970; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), also known by the alias Kagiso Mucanze, is an American vocalist and founding member of the R&B group Az Yet. A native of Philadelphia, Allen was instrumental in defining the group's harmonic sound, which blended traditional R&B sensibilities with intricate a cappella arrangements.
As a core member of the ensemble from its inception in 1989 until his departure in 2023, he contributed to the group's multi-platinum success and their prominence during the mid-1990s R&B resurgence, performing on hit singles that achieved global chart success.
Early Life
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Allen began his musical journey in a city renowned for its rich soul music history. In 1989, he co-founded Az Yet initially as a duo with fellow vocalist Shawn Rivera. The pair sought to expand their sound, eventually recruiting Kenny Terry, whom they discovered singing in the lobby of the Wyndham Hotel in Philadelphia. The lineup was further solidified with the additions of Damon Core, Dyshon Benson, and Claude Thomas. The group honed their performance skills in the Philadelphia area before a demo tape reached Jacqueline McQuam, a Los Angeles-based manager. McQuam, the mother-in-law of legendary producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, arranged for the group to perform at a showcase, leading to their signing with LaFace Records.
Career
Allen's career with Az Yet launched into the mainstream with the release of their self-titled debut album in 1996. The project featured production and writing contributions from industry heavyweights such as Babyface, David Foster, Sheila E., and Brian McKnight. The album's lead single, "Last Night," reached No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100, topped the R&B chart, and achieved Platinum certification. Their sophomore single, a cover of Chicago's "Hard to Say I'm Sorry" produced by David Foster, reached No. 8 on the Hot 100 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals.
Beyond the group's primary discography, Allen contributed backing vocals to the Academy Award-winning duet "When You Believe" by Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey for The Prince of Egypt soundtrack (1998). His tenure also included acting roles, such as appearing as part of "TJ's Band" in the television drama Fame L.A. and touring in 2013 as a featured performer in the musical My Brother Marvin.
Personal Life
Allen maintained a consistent presence in the music industry for over three decades, balancing his time between recording and live performance. While much of his personal life has remained private, he is recognized within the Philadelphia music community for his role in exporting the city's signature "Philly Soul" sound to international audiences.
He performed under the stage name Kagiso Mucanze during portions of his career. His tenure with Az Yet saw him navigate numerous lineup changes and industry shifts, remaining one of the group's longest-serving original members until his exit in 2023.
