Frederick Anthony Jackson (born 2 October 1956; New York City, New York) is an American R&B singer and songwriter who dominated the urban contemporary charts of the late 1980s and early 1990s. Renowned for his sophisticated, romantic ballads and a voice often compared to Luther Vandross, Jackson was a pivotal figure in the "quiet storm" radio format.
He achieved immediate superstardom with his 1985 debut album Rock Me Tonight, which spent six weeks at number one on the R&B charts, and solidified his legacy with timeless hits like "You Are My Lady", "Jam Tonight", and "Have You Ever Loved Somebody". Over the course of his career, he has successfully transitioned from a chart-topping major label force to a respected independent touring artist.
Early Life
Born in the Harlem section of New York City, Jackson was immersed in gospel music from a young age, receiving his earliest vocal training at the White Rock Baptist Church of Harlem. It was within this community that he met Paul Laurence, a pivotal figure who would later become his primary record producer and songwriting partner. After completing his formal education, Jackson joined Laurence's ensemble, LJE (Laurence Jones Ensemble), gaining early performance experience on the competitive New York nightclub circuit.
In the late 1970s, seeking broader opportunities, he relocated to the West Coast to serve as the lead singer for the California funk band Mystic Merlin. During his tenure with the group, he performed on three studio albums released between 1980 and 1982—Mystic Merlin, Sixty Thrills a Minute, and Full Moon—before returning to New York to resume his creative partnership with Laurence at Hush Productions.
Career
Upon his return to the East Coast, Jackson initially worked as a session vocalist, singing on demo recordings for Laurence's compositions and serving as a backing singer for Melba Moore, who had been impressed by his nightclub act in 1981. This exposure helped him secure a recording contract with Capitol Records in 1984. His debut solo album, Rock Me Tonight (1985), was an instant phenomenon; the title track stormed the R&B charts to spend six weeks at number one, while the follow-up single "You Are My Lady" peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. This massive crossover success earned him two Grammy Award nominations in 1986 for Best New Artist and Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male.
He maintained this momentum with his 1986 sophomore album Just Like the First Time, another platinum seller that featured the number one R&B duet with Melba Moore, "A Little Bit More". His dominance was further recognised in 1988 when he won an American Music Award for Favourite Soul/R&B Single for "Nice 'N' Slow".
Beyond his studio albums, Jackson contributed significantly to film soundtracks, recording the Michael Lloyd-produced duet "Love Survives" with Irene Cara for All Dogs Go to Heaven (1989) and appearing as himself to perform "Dream On" in the crime thriller King of New York (1990).
In recognition of his enduring influence on the genre, he was presented with the Legend Award at the 2019 Black Music Honours.
Personal Life
In recent years, he has been open about his health journey to inspire others. In September 2024, he publicly announced a diagnosis of kidney disease, using his platform to partner with the National Kidney Foundation to raise awareness about the condition. This health battle was accompanied by a significant weight loss, which he addressed with resilience and a renewed focus on wellness.
Current Activities
Managed by his own production and representation teams, Frederick Anthony Jackson is currently engaged in several high-profile projects. He remains a vibrant presence on the live circuit, with a confirmed 2026 touring schedule that includes performances at major venues such as the City Winery franchise and theatres across the United States.
Expanding his brand beyond music, he recently launched a luxury candle line titled "Scents of the Hits," featuring fragrances inspired by his classic songs like "Nice N' Slow" and "Rock Me Tonight". He continues to record and release music independently, ensuring his legacy reaches new generations of soul music enthusiasts.
