Cedric Napoleon

Cedric Alexander Napoleon (16 October 1962 – 16 June 2024; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) was an acclaimed American bassist, lead vocalist, and songwriter who came to international prominence as a co-founding member of the influential R&B and jazz fusion group Pieces of a Dream.

Renowned for his exceptional ability to alternate between a rhythmically driving electric bass and a fluidly melodic upright acoustic bass, he served as a defining force behind the band's signature smooth jazz and urban contemporary sound.

His soulful lead vocals on several of the group's most enduring tracks cemented his reputation as a versatile frontman. Throughout his multi-decade career, his technical virtuosity allowed him to move seamlessly between traditional jazz improvisation, heavy funk lines, and sophisticated urban soul.

Early Life

Hailing from the culturally vibrant city of Philadelphia, Napoleon demonstrated prodigious musical talent from a very early age, picking up both the acoustic and electric basses at just twelve years old and quickly earning a regional reputation as a musical prodigy. He cultivated his early musical foundations through formal training at the prestigious High School of the Creative and Performing Arts in Philadelphia, where he excelled in a rigorous program concentrating on advanced upright and electric bass techniques.

Immersed in the rich musical heritage of the city, he was deeply influenced by regional jazz, funk, and soul greats, which shaped his eclectic playing style. While still a teenager, he channelled his skills into community jam sessions and school ensembles, laying the groundwork for his entry into the professional music circuit.

Career

Napoleon co-founded Pieces of a Dream in 1975 alongside childhood friends Curtis Harmon and James Lloyd, naming the group after "Pieces of Dreams", a Michel Legrand tune famously recorded by Stanley Turrentine that they regularly performed.

Under the expert mentorship of jazz icon Grover Washington, Jr., who produced their first three albums for Elektra Records, the group transformed from a raw teenage jazz trio into an internationally celebrated R&B and smooth jazz sensation, even earning praise from Count Basie as "a tough act to follow".

Serving as a core pillar of the ensemble from 1975 until 2001, Napoleon's bass lines anchored classic albums such as Pieces of a Dream, We Are One, and Imagine This, while his distinctive lead vocals powered the crossover hit "Fo-Fi-Fo". He also contributed to the group's highly regarded R&B chart hits like "Warm Weather" and "What Can I Do". Beyond his long tenure with the group, he established himself as an elite session player and touring musician, collaborating with legendary names such as Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Patti LaBelle, Phyllis Hyman, The O'Jays, and The Stylistics.

Personal Life

Known for his warmth, mentorship, and deep dedication to his Philadelphia roots, Napoleon was an active cultural figure who committed much of his later life to community outreach and musical education.

He spent many years sharing his extensive industry expertise by teaching bass performance, vocal arrangements, and the history of jazz at the Philadelphia Clef Club of Jazz and Performing Arts, inspiring numerous emerging musicians. His artistic legacy as a foundational pioneer of smooth jazz fusion remains highly respected by peers and music historians alike.
