Glenn Jones

Glenn Jones (born 27 September 1962; Jacksonville, Florida) is an American R&B and soul singer, songwriter, and producer. Renowned for his emotive vocal delivery and ability to bridge the gap between gospel intensity and urban contemporary soul, he established himself as a chart-topping force in the 1980s and 1990s.

Initially gaining prominence through his work with Norman Connors, Jones built a durable solo career defined by a string of hit ballads and mid-tempo grooves, including the number one R&B single "Here I Go Again". His rich tenor voice and romantic lyrical themes have cemented his status as a key figure in the quiet storm genre.

Early Life

Raised in a large, religious family in Jacksonville, Jones began his musical journey in the church, where his mother served as a missionary evangelist. He started singing at the age of five and, supported by his older brothers Lewis and Luther who provided equipment and transportation, began performing professionally by age eight.

Jones honed his craft as a gospel singer with the Florida-based group The Modulations, recording the album Feel the Fire (1975) and touring from Florida to California. During these formative years, he worked with gospel legends such as the Mighty Clouds of Joy and the Reverend James Cleveland, experiences that deeply influenced his vocal technique before he transitioned into secular music.

Career

Jones successfully moved into the R&B field in 1980 when jazz percussionist Norman Connors featured him on the song "Melancholy Fire" from the album Take It to the Limit. The track reached number 20 on the Billboard R&B chart, launching Jones into national visibility.

After touring with Connors, he signed with RCA Records in 1983, releasing the mini-album Everybody Loves a Winner, which spawned the top 30 hit "I Am Somebody". His full-length debut, Finesse (1984), produced the number 3 R&B hit "Show Me" and the top 20 single "Bring Back Your Love". His follow-up, Take It from Me (1986), featured a title track that appeared in the film Youngblood.

Upon moving to Jive Records, he released the self-titled album Glenn Jones (1987), scoring a number 2 hit with "We've Only Just Begun (The Romance Is Not Over)". In 1990, he released All for You, which featured the original version of "Stay"; this track was later covered by the British group Eternal in 1993, becoming their debut hit and reaching number 4 in the UK and number 19 in the US.

Jones reached his commercial peak after moving to Atlantic Records in 1992 with the album Here I Go Again. The title track became his first and only single to reach number 1 on the Billboard R&B chart, while the follow-up "I've Been Searchin' (Nobody Like You)" peaked at number 8. He continued recording with the 1994 album Here I Am (featuring the minor hit "Round and Round"), followed by It's Time (1998) on SAR Records and Feels Good (2002) on Peak Records.

Personal Life

Jones maintains a stable personal life grounded in his faith and upbringing, often crediting his supportive family for keeping him focused. He is married to Genobia Jeter Jones, a respected vocalist he met through her uncle, the gospel legend Julius Cheeks. The couple has frequently collaborated musically, with Genobia contributing to the vocal arrangements on many of his projects.

Jones has been vocal about avoiding the "crazy drama" often associated with the music industry, preferring to let his work speak for itself. In recognition of his decades of contributions to the arts and entertainment, he received an honorary doctorate from Harvest Christian University in 2023.

Current Activities

Managed by his own production and representation teams, Glenn Jones is currently engaged in several high profile projects. He remains a dynamic live performer, with scheduled appearances at intimate venues including Bush Hall in London in late 2026 and celebratory homecoming concerts at the Ritz theater and Museum in Jacksonville.

He recently founded his own label, Talent Room Entertainment, to distribute new music and media projects. Jones continues to release fresh material, such as the single "Love By Design" featuring Regina Belle, ensuring his signature sound remains accessible to both long-time fans and new listeners.
