Luther Simmons

Luther Simmons (September 9, 1942 – May 9, 2016; born in New York City, New York) was an American soul and R&B vocalist and songwriter. As a founding member of The Main Ingredient, Simmons provided the lush, harmonic foundation that defined the group's sophisticated "champagne soul" sound during the 1970s.

Alongside Donald McPherson and Tony Silvester, he helped establish the trio as a cornerstone of the New York R&B scene, earning a permanent place in music history with million-selling hits such as "Everybody Plays the Fool" and "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely".

Early Life

Simmons began his musical journey in the vibrant doo-wop and soul circuits of New York City. In 1964, he joined forces with friends Donald McPherson and Panama-born Tony Silvester to form the vocal trio The Poets in Harlem. The group honed their harmonies on street corners and local venues, eventually securing their first recordings with Leiber & Stoller’s Red Bird label.

Following a brief stint performing as The Insiders, the trio adopted their permanent moniker in 1968 after spotting a Coca-Cola bottle in the studio listing "main ingredient" on its label.

Career

The Main Ingredient signed with RCA Records and released their debut album, L.T.D., in 1970. The group's momentum was briefly halted by the tragic death of lead singer McPherson in 1971, but the addition of Cuba Gooding Sr. sparked their most commercially successful era.

Collaborating with producer-arranger Bert DeCoteaux, the group released the RIAA Gold-certified single "Everybody Plays the Fool" (1972), which peaked at number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In a notable career pivot during the late 1970s, Simmons left the music industry to work as a stockbroker, a profession he held while sporadically reuniting with the group for albums like Ready for Love (1980).

Personal Life

Known for his quiet professionalism, Simmons largely retreated from the public eye following his permanent departure from the music business. He eventually settled into a private life away from the rigorous touring schedule that had defined his earlier years. Luther Simmons passed away on May 9, 2016, at the age of 73, following a battle with multiple myeloma.

His vocal contributions remain a staple of classic soul radio and R&B anthologies worldwide.
