Syleena Johnson

Syleena Johnson (born 2 September 1976; Harvey, Illinois), born Syleena Thompson, is an American R&B and soul singer-songwriter and actress. Possessing a powerful and soulful vocal delivery, she has established a distinguished career spanning over two decades in the music industry.

Her work is characterised by its emotional depth and rich storytelling, earning her recognition as a highly respected vocalist and a Grammy Award nomination for her high-profile collaborations.

Early Life

Born into a highly creative and public-spirited family, she is the daughter of the late R&B and blues singer Syl Johnson and Brenda Thompson, who made history as the first Black female police commissioner of Harvey, Illinois.

Alongside her two older sisters, Syleecia and Sylette, she was raised in an environment deeply immersed in the traditions of soul and blues music, which profoundly influenced her musical foundations and vocal style.

She pursued her academic and technical development at Drake University, where she studied psychology and participated in the gospel choir, before transferring to Columbia College Chicago to complete a bachelor's degree in music business, refining her understanding of both the creative and commercial aspects of the industry.

Career

Her professional recording career began in earnest when she signed with Jive Records, leading to the release of her debut studio album, Chapter 1: Love, Pain & Forgiveness, in 2001, which featured the successful single “I Am Your Woman”. She maintained a consistent timeline of conceptual releases, following with Chapter 2: The Voice in 2002.

In 2004, her career reached a major international milestone when she collaborated with hip-hop artist Kanye West on the critically acclaimed hit single “All Falls Down”, which earned her a Grammy nomination for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration. Her discography continued to expand with albums such as Chapter 3: The Flesh (2005), Chapter 4: Labor Pains (2009), Chapter V: Underrated (2011), and Chapter 6: Couples Therapy (2014).

Beyond the recording studio, she expanded her professional portfolio into television, appearing on the reality series R&B Divas: Atlanta and Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars, and serving as a co-host on the talk show Sister Circle from 2017 to 2020.

In her personal life, she has successfully balanced her public career with a stable family structure. She is married to former professional basketball player Kiwane Garris, and the couple have raised two sons together.
