Alexandra Burke

Alexandra Imelda Cecelia Ewen Burke (born 25 August 1988; Islington, London, England) is an English singer, songwriter and actress.

Early Life

Burke was born in Islington, London, the daughter of David Burke and British soul singer Melissa Bell, formerly of the group Soul II Soul. Her parents separated in 1992, and Burke grew up in a musical household alongside her siblings, often helping to care for her younger brother while her mother toured.

She began singing at the age of five and, at twelve, appeared as the youngest contestant on the television talent show Star for a Night, finishing as runner-up to Joss Stone. She attended Elizabeth Garrett Anderson School in Islington, leaving after completing her GCSEs to pursue music, performing in clubs around the UK and touring with Young Voices, a charity choir raising funds for children with leukaemia.

In 2005, she auditioned for the second series of The X Factor, reaching the final seven of her category before missing out on a place in judge Louis Walsh's top three.
 

Career

Burke returned to The X Factor in 2008 and won the show's fifth series, mentored by Cheryl Cole, performing a duet of "Listen" with Beyoncé as part of her victory. Her winner's single, a cover of "Hallelujah," became a million-selling chart-topper and the best-selling single of 2008, marking a first for a British female solo artist.

Her debut album, Overcome (2009), included the UK number one single "Bad Boys," featuring Flo Rida, and the top five hit "All Night Long," featuring Pitbull. Her second album, Heartbreak on Hold (2012), produced the number one single "Start Without You," featuring Laza Morgan, and the top five hit "Elephant," featuring Erick Morillo, while her third album, The Truth Is (2018), released through Decca Records, became her highest-charting album since 2009.

Across her recording career, Burke has amassed six UK top ten singles, sold more than five million records, and surpassed 150 million streams. Alongside music, she has built a substantial stage career, taking over the lead role of Rachel Marron in the West End musical The Bodyguard at the Adelphi Theatre in 2014 and touring with the production in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019, before leading a twelve-month West End residency as Deloris Van Cartier in Sister Act the Musical from 2016.

She has also starred in stage productions of Chess and Chicago, and in 2026 joined the cast of I'm Every Woman – The Chaka Khan Musical for its transfer to Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre. In 2017, she competed in the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing alongside professional partner Gorka Márquez.

Personal Life

Burke's mother, Melissa Bell, died in 2017 following kidney failure, on the same day that Burke made her debut on Strictly Come Dancing. She has spoken publicly about experiencing racial microaggressions early in her career, including being told to alter her natural hair and skin tone to fit industry expectations, a stance she has used to advocate for greater diversity in British entertainment.

She is in a relationship with footballer Darren Randolph, with whom she has two children, born in 2022 and 2023. Burke's journey from reality television winner to one of the UK's most enduring vocalists and West End leading ladies has made her a widely respected figure in British music and musical theatre.
 

Current Activities

Burke continues to perform across music and theatre, with 2026 engagements including her role in I'm Every Woman – The Chaka Khan Musical and a run as Carabosse in the pantomime Sleeping Beauty at Milton Keynes Theatre in December 2026, alongside live concert dates in the UK.
