Erykah Badu

Erica Abi Wright (born February 26, 1971; Dallas, Texas), known professionally as Erykah Badu, is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer who has earned widespread recognition as the Queen of Neo Soul.

Renowned for her eccentric personal style, spiritual themes, and distinct vocal phrasing that draws frequent comparisons to jazz legend Billie Holiday, she rose to global prominence in the late 1990s at the absolute vanguard of the neo-soul musical movement. Over a career spanning three decades, her meticulous, boundary-pushing recordings have cemented her legacy as a highly influential cultural icon. In recent years, she has experienced a major creative renaissance, marked by the release of her first full-length studio project in more than a decade, high-profile festival appearances, and a viral promotional media run.

Early Life

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Wright was immersed in a highly creative environment from her childhood, having her first taste of show business at the age of four when she sang and danced at the Dallas Theater Center under the careful guidance of her godmother. Her family dynamic deeply supported her early artistic expression, and by the age of fourteen, she was actively freestyling for a local radio station alongside her cousin.

In her youth, she decided to change the spelling of her first name from Erica to Erykah, believing her original moniker was a slave name, whilst adopting the surname Badu because it reflected her favourite jazz scat progression. After graduating from the prestigious Boker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, she went on to study theater at Grambling State University, a historically Black institution. However, she ultimately chose to withdraw from her university studies in 1993 to focus more fully on establishing her music career, teaching drama and dance to children at the South Dallas Cultural Center to support herself during her independent formative years.

Career

Badu's professional timeline entered a major commercial era after recording a nineteen-song demo tape titled Country Cousins with her cousin Robert "Free" Bradford, which swiftly captured the attention of music executive Kedar Massenburg.

She was signed to Kedar Entertainment and burst into the mainstream with her 1997 triple-platinum debut studio album, Baduizm, which spawned iconic singles like "On & On", "Appletree", and "Next Lifetime", earning her two Grammy Awards. Her mainstream commercial dominance continued with the release of her multi-platinum sophomore studio album, Mama's Gun, in 2000, which featured her first top-ten Billboard Hot 100 hit single, "Bag Lady", followed by Worldwide Underground in 2003 and her acclaimed New Amerykah series between 2008 and 2010.

In late August 2026, Badu surprised the global music industry by independently releasing Before the World Blows: The Abi and Alan Experiment, her first proper full-length studio album project since 2015. Produced entirely by the legendary hip-hop producer The Alchemist, the sixteen-track independent album grew from Badu's long-held desire to rap over classic East Coast instrumentals, delivering a psychedelic, genre-bending fusion of raw hip-hop sampling, jazz instrumentation, and contemporary R&B. The record featured prominent guest contributions from Steve Lacy, Westside Gunn, Earl Sweatshirt, DRAM, and Kamasi Washington, and was driven on digital streaming platforms by the hit singles "Next 2 U", "Witch Doctor", and her newly debuted exclusive live cut, "Echos 19 (Mix 112)".

Personal Life

In addition to her historic musical achievements, Badu's personal life has been defined by her community activism, family focus, and work outside the entertainment sphere. She is the mother of three children whom she shares with prominent hip-hop innovators André 3000, The D.O.C., and Jay Electronica, maintaining a close, collaborative relationship with all three fathers over the decades.

She has dedicated substantial time to humanitarian causes, establishing her non-profit organisation, B.L.I.N.D., to provide creative development opportunities to inner-city youth, whilst also gaining professional certification as a practicing birth and end-of-life doula. Whilst promoting her new studio music on platforms like The Shop and The Breakfast Club in October 2026, Badu went viral for comparing her timeless music catalogue to Tupperware. She amusingly explained that she has been uniquely blessed to craft durable classics like Baduizm and Mama's Gun that resonate so deeply that fans feel they do not need anything else, which poses a creative challenge when she attempts to perform brand-new music for an audience that arrived strictly to collect her vintage Tupperware.

Current Activities

Badu has maintained a massive global presence on the live festival circuit throughout 2026, co-headlining Jay-Z’s Roots Picnic, performing at Lauryn Hill's Diaspora Ccalling! festival in the United Kingdom, and selling out a highly celebrated headline engagement at the Hollywood Bowl in late September.

For her cinematic endeavours, she plays a featured role in Malcolm Washington's film adaptation of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, The Piano Lesson, alongside Samuel L. Jackson and John David Washington. Looking ahead to upcoming events, she has officially signed on to headline the soul-music-themed Soul on the Sea Cruise, where she is confirmed to perform her seminal debut album, Baduizm, in its entirety to celebrate its landmark thirtieth anniversary entering 2027.
