Jennifer Lopez

Jennifer Lynn Lopez (born July 24, 1969; the Bronx, New York), also known by the nickname "J.Lo," is an American singer, actress, dancer, and producer, recognised as one of the most successful and influential Latin R&B recording artists in American popular music.

Early Life

Lopez was born in the Bronx to Puerto Rican parents, David Lopez, a computer specialist, and Guadalupe Rodríguez, a kindergarten teacher, and was raised in the Castle Hill neighbourhood alongside two sisters. She trained extensively in dance from a young age, studying ballet and jazz, and attended Preston High School, a Catholic all-girls school in the Bronx. In 1991, she was selected as a backup dancer for New Kids on the Block, performing with the group during their rendition of "Games" at the 18th Annual American Music Awards, before landing a place as one of the "Fly Girl" dancers on the sketch comedy series In Living Color, having advanced through the finals from a pool of around 2,000 applicants. These early dance opportunities laid the groundwork for her transition into a recording career later in the decade.

Career

Lopez signed to Work Group/Sony in the late 1990s and released her debut studio album, On the 6, in 1999, which produced the number-one hit "If You Had My Love." In January 2001, she released her second album, J.Lo, becoming the first woman to have a number-one film, The Wedding Planner, and a number-one album simultaneously in the same week, a milestone widely cited as unprecedented at the time.

J.Lo went on to sell around 12 million copies worldwide, powered by the singles "Love Don't Cost a Thing," "Play," and "I'm Real." After the album's chart momentum began to slow, producer Tommy Mottola brought in rapper Ja Rule to record "I'm Real (Murder Remix)," which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of the September 11 attacks and helped push J.Lo past 3.8 million copies sold domestically. Building on that success, Lopez and Epic Records released the remix album J to tha L–O! The Remixes in February 2002, the first remix album in history to debut at number one on the Billboard 200, led by "Ain't It Funny (Murder Remix)," again featuring Ja Rule alongside Caddillac Tah, which also topped the Hot 100.

She continued recording through the 2000s and 2010s with albums including This Is Me… Then (2002), featuring "Jenny from the Block," Rebbeca (2005), the Spanish-language Como Ama una Mujer (2007), Love? (2011), and A.K.A. (2014), which included the singles "On the Floor," a collaboration with Pitbull that became one of the best-selling singles of all time, "Get Right," and "Booty." In 2012, amid her divorce from Marc Anthony, she released the greatest hits compilation Dance Again… The Hits, led by the single "Dance Again," and launched the Dance Again World Tour, her first headlining concert tour.

She later held a Las Vegas residency, Jennifer Lopez: All I Have, at The Axis at Planet Hollywood, opening the run with reunion performances of "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny" alongside Ja Rule, and performed a widely noted joint set with Pitbull at the 2013 Premios Juventud Awards. In 2013, Lopez was honoured with the 2,500th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2013 she became the first woman to receive the Billboard Icon Award, a lifetime-achievement honour previously given to artists including Stevie Wonder and Prince. She has also received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award for her contributions to music video. From 2017, she produced and served as a judge on the televised dance competition World of Dance. She returned to Las Vegas in late 2025 with a new residency, backed by a 17-piece band including an all-female string section, performing a set that blends her chart hits with Broadway-influenced material, and the opening nights again featured a surprise reunion with Ja Rule for "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny."

Personal Life

Lopez has been married four times: to waiter Ojani Noa from 1997 to 1998, to dancer and choreographer Cris Judd from 2001 to 2003, to singer Marc Anthony from 2004 to 2014, with whom she has twins, Max and Emme, and to actor and director Ben Affleck, whom she married in 2022 and divorced in 2024, with the divorce finalised in January 2025. She was previously engaged to former professional baseball player Alex Rodriguez.

Lopez has spoken publicly about music as her first creative love, tracing it back to her childhood in the Bronx, and has supported charitable initiatives through the Lopez Family Foundation, co-founded with her sister to support children's health. Her run of crossover hits in the early 2000s is widely credited with helping open the door for Latin artists in mainstream American pop.
