Sonyaé Elise

Sonyae Elise (born 10 July 1992; New Jersey) is an American singer-songwriter based in Los Angeles.

Best known for her powerful vocal delivery and emotive lyricism, she first gained national prominence as the winner of the inaugural season of the Bravo songwriting competition Platinum Hit. Since her television debut, she has established herself as a sought-after collaborator in the R&B and hip-hop communities, contributing to projects for major artists and earning a Grammy nomination for her songwriting contributions.

Early Life

Born in New Jersey, Elise developed a passion for storytelling and performance at a young age. Although she did not receive formal musical training and does not play instruments or read sheet music, she found a natural outlet in lyricism. She spent much of her youth writing in notebooks and scripts found at her mother's house, viewing writing as the primary vehicle to express her thoughts. Her early artistic foundations were built in the theatre, where she participated in productions of Grease and The Lion King, aspiring initially to write music for plays. Musically, she drew heavy influence from the narrative styles of pop music as well as the rhythmic deliveries of hip-hop icons such as KRS-One and MC Lyte.

Career

Elise’s professional breakthrough arrived in 2011 when she competed on Platinum Hit, a reality competition series for emerging songwriters. She emerged as the winner of the show's only season, securing a prize package that included $100,000, a recording contract with RCA/Jive Records, and a publishing deal with The Writing Camp. Following her victory, she released her winning composition, "My Religion", as a commercial single. She subsequently transitioned into a successful career as a songwriter and featured artist, contributing vocals and lyrics to various high-profile projects. Her work received significant critical recognition at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021, where she was nominated for Best R&B Song for co-writing "Collide", a track performed by Tiana Major9 and EARTHGANG for the Queen & Slim soundtrack.

Personal Life

Elise is candid about her unorthodox approach to music creation, often emphasising that her lack of technical instrumentation skills has never hindered her ability to compose. She relies on her intuitive sense of melody and her background in theatre to craft songs that are emotionally resonant and narratively driven. While she keeps the details of her private life relatively low-profile, she remains vocal about her artistic process, describing her songwriting as a deeply personal form of expression rooted in the "old stuff" and journals she kept throughout her childhood.

Current Activities

At present, Sonyae Elise remains active within her genre, with updates announced via official channels as confirmed. She continues to operate as an independent artist, maintaining a steady output of new material. In 2026, she released the single "50FIFTY", continuing to showcase her evolution as a solo performer while maintaining her presence in the Los Angeles music scene.
