Rosalia De Souza

Rosalia de Souza (born 4 July 1966; Nilópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) is a Brazilian bossa nova vocalist.

She is highly regarded within the international jazz circuit for her distinctive contemporary blend of traditional Brazilian rhythms with European electronic and jazz elements. Over her multi-decade career, she has established herself as a key figure in the modern revival of bossa nova, frequently collaborating with notable DJs and producers to bridge continental musical styles.

Early Life

Born and raised in the Nilópolis municipality of Rio de Janeiro, an area widely famous for its legendary samba school, Beija-Flor, de Souza grew up surrounded by a vibrant cultural environment. Her early passion for musical arts was heavily cultivated and encouraged by her father. In 1989, at the age of 21, she travelled to Italy, choosing to settle in Rome. Shortly after her arrival, she formalised her creative education by enrolling at the Scuola Popolare di Testaccio. During her time at the academy, she extensively studied music theory, jazz, jazz history, and Cuban percussion, establishing a comprehensive technical foundation for her future professional repertoire.

Career

Following her studies, de Souza began performing in major Roman jazz clubs alongside prominent expatriate Brazilian musicians and local instrumentalists. Her career reached a significant milestone in 1994 when she met the Italian DJ and producer Nicola Conte, who involved her in the acclaimed Fez creative collective. This partnership led to her participation in the 1995 Quintetto X album Novo Esquema da Bossa, where she contributed vocals to a well-received version of “Senza Paura”. In 2001, she represented Italy at the prestigious Montreux Jazz Festival as part of the Schema Sextet alongside Nicola Conte. Her formal debut studio album, Garota Moderna, arrived in 2003 under the Milan-based independent label Schema Records, featuring tracks such as “Maria Moita”. The record was succeeded in 2004 by the remix collection Garota Diferente, which featured reworkings of her material by major international electronic and nu-jazz acts. She subsequently returned to Rio de Janeiro to record her second studio project, Brasil Precisa Balançar, which was produced under the supervision of legendary bossa nova maestro Roberto Menescal and featured guest contributions from singer-songwriter Marcos Valle.

Personal Life

Having relocated permanently to Italy in the late 1980s, she has spent decades acting as an essential bridge between traditional Brazilian bossa nova and the European jazz scene. Her sophisticated phrasing, fluid timing, and light vocal style have drawn frequent, favourable comparisons to iconic genre pioneers such as Astrud Gilberto.

Current Activities

At present, de Souza remains active within her genre, with updates announced via official channels as confirmed. She continues to command a steady international presence, regularly scheduling live appearances across European jazz venues and multi-genre music festivals. Her recorded music and legacy catalogue continue to reach global audiences through major streaming platforms and specialised vinyl reissues, securing her ongoing influence in modern Latin jazz.
