Jo Jo Hailey

Joel "JoJo" Hailey (born 10 June 1971, Charlotte, North Carolina) is an American singer, songwriter, and record producer best known as a primary vocalist of the rhythm and blues group Jodeci.

Alongside his brother Cedric "K-Ci" Hailey, he achieved global recognition during the 1990s as a foundational figure in contemporary R&B, soul, and new jack swing. His distinctive vocal style, characterised by smooth execution and emotional delivery, helped shape the sonic direction of his main group as well as his subsequent spin-off vocal duo, K-Ci & JoJo. He has secured multiple prominent industry accolades, including three Billboard Music Awards and a Soul Train Music Award with Jodeci, alongside an American Music Award as a member of K-Ci & JoJo.

Early Life

Hailey grew up in a deeply musical and religious household alongside his older brother, Cedric. Raised by parents who were active gospel musicians, he received his earliest musical foundations performing in local Baptist church choirs. During his childhood, he and his brother formed a touring gospel quartet known as Little Cedric and the Hailey Singers, releasing several traditional albums in the mid-1980s. After securing a contract with Uptown Records, the group released their multi-platinum debut album, Forever My Lady, in 1991, which went on to win the 1992 Billboard Music Award for Top R&B Album. The group secured further industry milestones that same year, winning Billboard Music Awards for Top R&B Song for "Come and Talk to Me" and Top R&B Artist, alongside a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Album.

Following major releases such as Diary of a Mad Band and The Show, the After-Party, the Hotel, Jodeci won another Soul Train Music Award in 1994 for Best R&B/Soul Single for "Lately". In 1996, the Hailey brothers collaborated with hip-hop artist 2Pac on the Billboard Hot 100 number-one single "How Do U Want It", prompting a 1997 Grammy Award nomination and the launch of their spin-off duo, K-Ci & JoJo, the following year. The duo achieved massive commercial success with their triple-platinum debut album, Love Always, which featured the global number-one ballad "All My Life" and earned Hailey a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song. K-Ci & JoJo won the 1999 American Music Award for Favourite R&B Band/Duo/Group. Hailey's technical milestones also include direct film soundtracks and media compositions for cinematic projects such as Bulletproof, For Love of the Game, and Save the Last Dance.
