Wycliffe A. Gordon (born 29 May 1967; Waynesboro, Georgia, United States) is an American jazz trombonist, arranger, composer, bandleader, and collegiate‑conservatory educator. Nicknamed “Pinecone”, he also sings and performs on didgeridoo, trumpet, soprano trombone, tuba, and piano, bringing a broad instrumental palette and a song‑centred approach to ensemble writing and improvisation.
Early Life
Gordon was raised in a religious and musically active household that shaped his early direction. His father, Lucius Gordon (1936–1997), served as a church organist in Burke County, Georgia, and was a classical pianist and teacher, providing daily exposure to harmony, hymnody, and disciplined practice. At 13, he developed a focused interest in jazz while listening to records inherited from his great‑aunt, including a five‑LP Sony‑Columbia anthology; early fascinations with Louis Armstrong’s Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings informed his sense of phrasing, time, and repertoire. He attended Sego Junior High School in Augusta, where trombonist Don Milford was his band director, and graduated from Butler High School in 1984 after performing in New York City with the McDonald’s High School All‑American Band. He went on to study music at Florida A&M University, playing in the marching band and deepening his grounding in brass performance and arranging.
Career
Gordon’s early professional profile grew through work with Wynton Marsalis, establishing his command of swing vocabulary and section leadership. He has since broadened his scope across concert works, small‑group touring, and cross‑genre projects, including The Search, which features didgeridoo and re‑imagined Thelonious Monk material alongside traditional trombone performance, as well as engagements in Gospel settings. In 1995, he arranged and orchestrated the current theme for NPR’s All Things Considered, building on Donald J. Voegeli’s 1971 melody, and on 24 September 2004, he conducted the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra for the premiere of his original score to Oscar Micheaux’s 1925 silent film Body and Soul. Internationally, Gordon gained further visibility through South Australia’s Generations in Jazz in 2016 and 2017, appearing with artists including James Morrison, Jazzmeia Horn, Gordon Goodwin, and Ross Irwin. For more than a decade, he has collaborated with visual artist and educator Ligel Lambert on multidisciplinary projects. In 2006 he founded Blues Back Records, launched alongside the album Rhythm on My Mind with Jay Leonhart; the imprint, named in reference to his piece “I Want My Blues Back”, supported artists meeting his originality criteria and was active until 2011.
Personal Life
Public information highlights a lifelong connection to church and community music through his family background and ongoing educational commitments. Gordon is known among students and colleagues for an emphasis on melody, storytelling, and stylistic breadth, integrating New Orleans, swing, Gospel, and modern jazz aesthetics. His nickname “Pinecone” reflects a personable stage presence and enduring ties to his Georgia roots.
