Walter Beasley

Walter Beasley (born 24 May 1961; El Centro, California) is an American alto and soprano saxophonist, singer, composer, and producer, best known for his contributions to the smooth jazz genre.

Early Life

Beasley grew up in El Centro, California, and discovered his musical calling in the 1970s after his aunt gave him his first Grover Washington Jr. record at the age of nine. He began performing publicly at thirteen, singing in Spanish with the band Los Elegantes, and went on to play saxophone and sing in various bands throughout Southern California during his teenage years, drawing on both his love of R&B and funk and his training in classical and jazz saxophone.

He attended Berklee College of Music, graduating alongside classmates including saxophonist Branford Marsalis and vocalist Rachelle Ferrell.

Career

Beasley took a short-term teaching position at Berklee following his 1984 graduation, a role that became a permanent career spanning 35 years. He released his self-titled debut album on Polydor in 1987, and has since released 26 albums, developing a style blending contemporary R&B and jazz that became known as smooth jazz.

Since 1998, he has ranked among the top ten best-selling African American saxophonists globally. His album Ready for Love (2007) produced three number-one Billboard smooth jazz singles, including "I'm Back" and "Steady as She Goes." He has recorded steadily across labels including Shanachie, Warner Bros., Mercury, and his own label, Affable Records, with releases such as Tonight We Love (1997), Rendezvous (2002), Backatcha! (2010), I'm Back (2015), and Blackstreams (2017).

In 2019, he released the album Going Home, featuring Phil Davis, Derek Cannon, and Tres Gilbert, and guested on bassist Byron Miller's number-two Billboard smooth jazz hit "The B Spot." Beasley was named Billboard's Smooth Jazz Artist of the Year in 2019 and won SoulTracks' Instrumentalist of the Year award in 2023. In 2023, he returned to nationwide touring after a five-year break taken to care for his parents, releasing the singles "Déjà Vu," "Nice and Easy" (featuring Najee), "Lil' Darlin'," and "Do You Wanna Dance" (featuring Rebecca Jade), alongside the album Do You Wanna Dance. In 2024, he released two further albums, Live & Blessed and Tribute to Soul, and re-released his earlier records Go with the Flow and Backatcha!

In 2025, he released his first Spanish-language album, Sin Palabras, preceded by the singles "Abur Paisano" and "Lazy Afternoon (Kenny's Groove)." In 2026, he released the EP 65 Bounce, its title track a personal tribute marking his 65th birthday. Alongside his recording career, he founded Affable Publishing and Affable Records, has released several educational DVDs, and has authored four books, including Performance Insight (for Musicians) Vol II and Quotes for Grown Folks.

Personal Life

Beasley stepped back from touring for several years to care for his parents before returning to the road in 2023. He has continued to teach and mentor musicians throughout his career, both during his long tenure at Berklee and through online classes and social media lessons in more recent years.

He is widely regarded within the smooth jazz community as a dedicated educator and role model for younger musicians, and his sustained output and chart success have made him one of the genre's most consistent and enduring figures.

Current Activities

Beasley continues to record and perform, having released the EP 65 Bounce in 2026, and has also launched an ambient music channel, "The Bleu Zone Ambient Improv," on YouTube.
