Audra McDonald

Audra Ann McDonald (born 3 July 1970; West Berlin, West Germany) is an American singer, actress and classical soprano.

Best known for her work on the Broadway stage, she has built a singular career across musical theatre, drama, opera, television and film, becoming the most Tony Award-winning performer in acting categories and the first person to win in all four acting categories. In addition to six Tony Awards, she has received two Grammy Awards and a Primetime Emmy Award, and has also been honoured with the National Medal of Arts and induction into the American Theatre Hall of Fame.

Early Life

McDonald was born to American parents, Anna Kathryn Jones McDonald, a university administrator, and Stanley James McDonald Jr., a high school principal, while her father was serving with the United States Army in West Germany. She was raised in Fresno, California, alongside her younger sister Alison, who later became a writer and director for television and film. Her early artistic development was shaped through work with Dan Pessano and Roger Rocka's Good Company Players, beginning in their junior company, and she later graduated from the Roosevelt School of the Arts programme at Theodore Roosevelt High School in Fresno. She went on to study classical voice under Ellen Faull at the Juilliard School, graduating in 1993 and establishing the technical foundation for a career that would move fluently between stage, concert and opera performance.

Career

McDonald made her Broadway debut in The Secret Garden before winning Tony Awards for Carousel, Master Class and Ragtime in rapid succession, establishing herself early as a major stage performer. She later received further Tony recognition for Marie Christine, 110 in the Shade, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, Ohio State Murders and Gypsy, while winning additional Tony Awards for A Raisin in the Sun, The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess and Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill. Beyond Broadway, she has maintained a notable screen career, including performances in Private Practice, The Good Wife, The Good Fight, The Gilded Age, Wit, Beauty and the Beast, Respect, Rustin, Down Low and Origin. As a classical soprano, she has appeared with major organisations including the Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic, and her recording of Kurt Weill's Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny won Grammy Awards for Best Classical Album and Best Opera Recording. Her solo recording work has included the albums Way Back to Paradise, How Glory Goes, Happy Songs, Build a Bridge and Go Back Home, reflecting a repertoire that spans musical theatre, jazz standards, American song and classical material.

Personal Life

McDonald has spoken publicly about the influence of her family and early mentors on her artistic life, and her career has also had wider cultural significance through her refusal to accept narrow racial typecasting in casting traditions. By taking on roles such as Carrie Pipperidge in Carousel, Lizzie Curry in 110 in the Shade and Rose in Gypsy, she has helped widen the conversation around representation on the American stage. She was married to bassist Peter Donovan from 2000 to 2009, and in 2012 she married actor Will Swenson, with whom she has performed on stage; she is also a mother. Her standing in theatre and music rests not only on awards and range, but on the way she has combined technical excellence with a broad, inclusive vision of performance.

Current Activities

McDonald remains active across stage, concert and screen work. Recent verified activity includes her Broadway return as Rose in Gypsy, which brought her a record-breaking eleventh Tony Award nomination, ongoing visibility through official announcements on her website, and continued public recognition, including the award of an honorary Doctor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 2026. Her established concert career also continues through live engagements in the United States, alongside her television and recording work
